Ashtamudi, Kerala

Ashtamudi is a sprawling expanse of water, the second largest and deepest wetland ecosystem in Kerala.

Like an octopus, it is eight-armed (ashtamudi literally means eight locks of hair). Vembanad (which includes Kumarakom) is larger and much promoted by Kerala Tourism, but lesser known Ashtamudi has much to offer. All the canals and creeks of these backwaters converge at Neendakara, a hub of the state’s fishing industry. 

 

 

Along both banks of the lake and its backwater canals, coconut groves and palm trees interspersed with towns and villages are seen. Quilon is an important historic port city located on the right bank of the lake and boat cruises are operated by the Kollam Boat Club from Quilon to Alappuzha providing transport access to many other towns and villages along this route, apart from the luxury “house boats” which also operate in the lake.  

 

The boat journey is an 8 hour trip, winds through lakes, canals and water bound villages, and gives a complete exposure to the beauty of the backwaters of Ashtamudi Lake. Chinese fishing nets, called cheena vala in the Malayalam language, are used by local fisherman and are a common sight along the waterway.
 

Kollam, located on the banks of the Ashtamudi Lake, was once a prosperous and ancient sea port, trading with the Chinese, Romans, Phoenicians, Portuguese, Dutch and the British. It is said that Marco Polo, the Venetian traveler, visited Kollam and other towns on the west coast.
 

 

 

How to Reach -

By Air: The international airport at Thiruvananthapuram, 71 km away, is the nearest airport. Over 40 national and international flights operate out of Thiruvananthapuram on a daily basis. From the airport taxis are easily available to reach Kollam.
By Rail: Kollam is the nearest rail head. It lies on the Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram rail line. The city is connected by rail to Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Mangalore and Hyderabad. Almost all trains stop at the station.
By Bus: Kollam, the nearest city, is connected to other major cities of South India through frequent bus services. Buses ply from all major cities of Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Kochi and Thrissur. Both luxury as well as semi deluxe buses are available.

Kerala:

Kerala is one of the most beautiful places in India. Thousands of visitors are coming in each year. Kerala is considered as the land of green magic is a narrow it is situated in the south-west coast of India, sandwiched between the Lakshadweep Sea and the Western Ghats.

Kerala occupies the region known as the Malabar Coast. It is surrounded by the south Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The rain-laden southwest monsoon comes across the Arabian Sea to hit Kerala around 1st June, and expends much of its waters here. More than 40 rivers flow down the Western Ghats to meet the Arabian Sea forming, with the backwash of the sea, a complex of canals and lakes called the Kerala Backwaters. This combined package of beaches, backwaters and greenery is what the tourism department promotes as Gods Own Country, making tourism one of Kerala's main businesses.

Kerala's history of being a progressive princely estate (Travancore) and long stints of Communist Party rule in independent India have led to high rates of literacy and life expectancy. But the state is not industrialized. Agriculture is a dominant occupation  rice, coconut, tea, coffee, and the spices pepper, cardamom, cashew which the Malabar Coast has traded for centuries. Fishing is another mainstay. The main cities of Kerala are capital Thiruvananthapuram (popularly called Trivandrum) and Kochi (popularly Cochin) of which Kochi is now a rising hub of industry and investment. Both cities have international airports.

The coastal areas of Kerala are a vast network of rivers, lakes, and lagoons, known as the "backwaters." Almost all transportation is by boat. These guys had been dredging sand and have a boat that's on the verge of capsizing.

Kochi harbour was an international port for Arab, Portuguese, Dutch, and British trade since the 14th century. Modern Kochi has Portuguese churches, Dutch buildings and old Jew quarters. Thiruvananthapuram was earlier the seat of the royal family of the kingdom of Travancore. Its Fort area has palaces, temples, and ornate residences. Alappuzha (called Alleppey) is a good backwaters cruise hub. Down the coast, Bekal Fort Beach, Cherai Beach, (25 kms from Kochi), Varkala and Kovalam Beaches (south of Thiruvananthapuram) are popular spots. Eravikulam and Silent Valley National Parks are reachable from the hill spots of Munnar and Palakkad.

Culturally Kerala offers Kalaripayattu, an ancient martial art, and Kathakali dance in which elaborately costumed artists perform stories from the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata.

Kerala: The land of god, spices and natural beauty

As one leaves behind the misty hilly region of Munnar, with silver clouds roaming around its hills and valleys, one is taken in by the breathtaking view of the hilly tea estates, situated a top 1600 sq mtrs.

This panoramic view is accompanied by the constant sound of gurgling water, as the journey is intercepted by waterfalls and dams along the way.

Munnar, Kerala's hill station, is also known for its spices - cardamom, turmeric, cinnamon, coffee beans, pepper, coco used for making chocolate, cashew plantations and several herbs that are very effectively used to make Ayurvedic medicines.

Medicine, that is used for cosmetic reasons to rejuvenate the body, for glowing skin and improved hair conditions as well as medicinal purposes for curing cases of paralysis, insomnia, joint disorders and muscular atrophy among others.

The tea estates of Munnar grow a variety of teas, among which is the famous silver or white tea which is quite rare, as it made by plucking the top most tea leaf. This rare tea, known for its medicinal value of containing anti-oxidants besides reducing cholesterol can cost up to Rs7,000/- per kg.

Apart from the natural edible spices that are used in kitchens around the world, Kerala offers a variety of other spices that make life worthwhile, attracting visitors from across the world.

The beaches and lakes of Munnar that are pristine and pure, remind one of similar spots in Switzerland. The lush green rolling meadows with cattle grazing in them, reminds one of the slopping meadows of California. As one heads south of Munnar, the realisation strikes that picturesque as Munnar maybe,Kerala is not known for this hill station that attracts thousands of foreign tourists each year, instead it is known for its back waters!

Allepey, known for the back waters of the Arabian Sea is a very popular destination. The lake Alapuzha known as the eastern Venice, is crawling with tourists.

It's a common sight to see young Indian newly-weds honeymooners, strolling the small lanes hand in hand. The best way to enjoy the back water is to spend a night in a house boat.

Much like the shikara of Srinangar the boat ride is a lazy one, as the boat rolls along a water-scape lined on either side with coconut trees and lush green vegetation. It is rightly described as a tropical paradise with swinging palms and wide sandy beaches.

Besides adventure and tourism, there is a large section of people who visit the state during the winter months for religious reasons.

Besides the famous Guruvayoor temple, the state is known for the Sabrimala temple situated in the Sabri hills in the Western Ghats.

This temple has a hard penance where the followers maintain a 40-day fast, wearing black clothes and walk up seven hills bare-chested carrying offerings on their heads. On Jan 14, the day of 'Sankranti' the temple, is expected to receive as many as 25 lakh devotees as visitors.

These devotes are mostly men, since women during their puberty and child bearing ages are not allowed into the temple.

'God's own country' as the state is rightly branded and marketed, seems to be self-sufficient in natural resources and is abundant in natural beauty. The only state with 100% literacy is also the only matriarchal state of India, where the women inherit the family property and the men move into the woman's household after marriage.

Thekkady
