This years onam fall in the first week of September ie on the 2nd of September 2009. Onam is the only festival in kerala which is widely celebrated by all the keralites those who are in kerala and who are outside kerala. The festival of onam falls on the malayalam month of chingam and marks the homecoming of legendary King Mahabali.
Onam - the harvest festival in Kerala usually lasts for about 10 days. In the earlier day onam was celebrated for about 28 days. The celebration of onam bring out the best of kerala cultural heritage and tradition. Intricately decorated Pookalam(The atham star that is 10 days behind of Onam is on 24th of August. From Atham onwards people will start laying Onam pookalam and ends on Onam day), ambrosial Onasadya, breathtaking Snake Boat Race and exotic Kaikottikali dance are some of the most remarkable features of Onam. In Kerala, people celebrate onam in their families. However, outside of Kerala normaly malayalee associations used to conduct onam celebrations. All this function will have lot of cultural programs like bharatnatyam, mohiniyattam, and thiruvathira kali etcAs onam falls after the harvest season of Kerala, some people consider it as harvest festival of Kerala. Though Onam Festival is celebrated throughout Kerala, but the celebrations at Thiruvananthapuram, Trichur and Kottayam are the most magnificent ones. Especially, the Kaikottikkali or Thiruvathirakkali performed by girls, around the traditional brass lamp, leaves you mesmerized. Many Tour operators offers tour package to visit kerala during onam festival. These onam tour package generally starts on the first of september 2009 and continue for 10 days visiting all major destinations in kerala.
